Read Susan Tweit's interview with Kathleen Dean Moore, author of Wild Comfort. Kathleen Dean Moore lives in a college town at the confluence of two Oregon rivers, and in summer, in a little cabin on the shore of a southeast Alaskan inlet. An essayist, activist, and professor, she brings together natural history, philosophical ideas, and creative expression in a search for lasting, loving ways to live on Earth.

Mennonite in a Little Black Dress
|
From Sharon Lippincott's review: Mennonites—the word brings to mind women in prim calico dresses with longish skirts, hair in buns covered by gauzy white hats, and men in suspenders. My contact with Mennonites has been limited to averted glances or shy smiles in discount stores and restrooms along the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and I've always been curious about these rural neighbors.

True Words From Real Women
"Books are like lobster shells. We surround ourselves with them, then we grow out of them and leave them behind, as evidence of our earlier stages of development."
—Dorothy L. Sayers
"We all become different readers in how we respond to books, why we need them, what we take from them. We become different in the questions that arise as we read, in the answers that we find, in the degree of satisfaction or unease we feel with those answers...In the hands of a different reader, the same story can be a different story."
—Amy Tan
